A playthrough of Capcom's 1987 platformer for the NES, Mega Man.
Mega Man marked the beginnings of one of Capcom's largest and most successful franchises. With it, Keiji Inafune and friends established the blue bomber as an icon of the 8-bit generation, and did so with an incredible amount of panache for a game of its age, especially given that it was a new IP.
Mega Man isn't as refined or as balanced as many of its sequels, but still it handily earns its spot among the NES's top-shelf action games. It's also the hardest of the six original NES titles, with punishing boss fights and some insanely hard-to-avoid obstacles. It does, however, more than reward you for the effort with the sheer quality of its gameplay.
The game has seen a number of rereleases over the years, as well as a couple of remakes. It got a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive remake as part of The Wily Wars, a PS1 release as part of the Rockman Complete Works series (a line of enhanced ports that were also later put on the GameCube/PS2/Xbox in Mega Man Collection), and yet another full remake, Mega Man Powered Up released exclusively for the PSP.
They're all good, but the original NES version is still my go-to!
Whether you like the game or not, it's difficult to not respect it for what it accomplished, both for Mega Man and for action games in general.
Oh yeah, while recording this, I experienced a glitch at 34:35. I've never seen that before in all the times I've played this - I guess it didn't expect me to get hit as the screen was transitioning. I left it in (instead of recording the video over again) because I thought it was a nifty little quirk.
